As I'm writing this, I'm actually in my fourth year the first semester, which would be my last semester before I go for my practical. Third year- was it tough? I can't exactly say it was tough because I do have some free spaces. But I have to act in our drama class while at the same time doing the first few chapters of our so-called research paper. The research paper is difficult to do if you do not understand the terms and concepts. So, this is my advice, pick a good tutor. A good tutor will explain to you what he/she is looking for in a research paper and what do all the alien terms mean.
My tutor? Um, I pick the wrong tutor so I ended up with a B for my research paper which is extremely sad. And dear readers, please do your research paper and submit on time. There are students failing this course because of it. However, there are unfortunate students who have legit reasons as to why the turn in their submission a little bit later, who fail as well. Hence, please, listen to me and choose the right tutor. Go for Dr. Aida. I heard she is a good tutor. Her students did the research chapter by chapter with her guidance. The course that I'm talking about is Latihan Penyelidikan 1. It's a new course but a very messy course.
The next course you should beware of is Latihan Keusahawanan (?), I forgot what it is called actually. This course, in my opinion, it's not severely difficult. However, it's the way you do it that will determine whether it will be difficult or not. I've taken a Citra subject with this lecturer before so I know how he works. Got an A for that Citra subject and this subject as well. You need to show him real effort and impress him with your work, which could be hard if you don't know what he wants or what he is looking for in the assignment or it could be easy if you know the ropes to impress him. I also manage to get an A for this course as well, thank goodness.
I also did a mentor-mentee program for Teaching Writing subject where each of one TESL students will mentor about 2 to 3 pupils from Akademi Menara Gading (AMG). I believe it's a yearly program for third-year TESL students. It' not quite hard but then again, it's up to the mentee whether they really want to learn from you or not. English language, else than being taught by others, you really have to work for it yourself. This course is an okay course for me. Enjoyable, even.
In third year, you'll do a lot of research. For the second semester alone, I have to do three research (2 partner research, 1 group research) and lord, the number of journals I have to read. I mean, I love reading but when you have so many on your plate and so much info, you have to decide which is the best to be put in your research. So it could get really tough. But it's okay, you can do this.
Oh, and the most shocking thing- we have THIRD semester for our third year. As TESL students in UKM, you have to go through two internships! One industrial internship, and the second one your teaching practical. Let me tell you, finding a company to accept you as an intern is hard. Because they are not used to TESL students seeking an internship because that never happens in Malaysia, until our batch. Search for a place for internship as early as possible. Some companies will pay you and some may not. I did my internship at a language center back in my hometown as an admin. You can work as an admin at a tuition center too, just a suggestion.
Overall, for second semester and third semester, I did okay. Alhamdulilah, still DL. I have stopped attending DL ceremony at this point because I'm tired and I don't want to leave my safe confine. No, I didn't mean to brag or stuffs. I'm just purely exhausted, mentally and physically that I cherish every rest moment I have in my life. I can't believe I'm thisclose to graduating. I just want to graduate and get this over with.
I'll make a post about all the Citra courses I took while I was here soon. I think that would be interesting and important to you too.
Best regards.
