Banchelor in TESL UKM: First Semester

I decided to update today, a day before I start my second semester. So, semester one is a roller coaster ride for me. It was tough, so many sleepless nights and anxiety thoughts. I enrolled in UKM on week 7, right on the mid-sem of the first semester. I was forced to merge with the 'arus perdana' students of UKM which means I had to catch up with all the seven weeks that I have missed; the seven weeks worth of assignments and the seven weeks worth of lectures. It was insane but I somehow made it.

I remember on the first week of my enrolment, I suddenly needed to take a quiz of a subject I barely knew about. Can you imagine yourself having to take a quiz about an alien topic? I had to go through that since there'll be no exceptions or handicap for me even though I was a fresh, new student in Banchelor of TESL. My answers were all nonsense, nothing seems right so when I walked out from the exam hall, there was only one thing on my mind; I am going to fail this for sure.

Only God knows how hard it was for me to juggle up with double classes, double the amount of assignments to make up for the 7 lost weeks. There's so many presentations, so many programs and Lord, it's just so tiring and frustrating but I pushed myself to catch up with the other students. I slept less, worked more and of course played harder to balance out my energy and stress level.

But you know what, all the hell that I went through this first semester, it's worth it. Who would have thought someone who was rejected by UPU like me, someone who other universities didn't even consider my appeal letter, someone that deemed as 'tidak layak untuk sambung pengajian dalam degree TESL', someone who joined the program very late during midsem, someone like me to get a good result on my first semester?!

I thought I would fail and will have to repeat my paper.
I thought I would disappoint and disgrace my family.
I thought I would be a waste of my parent's handwork.

But that's not the case now.

I did it.

I did it.

I get dean list! I did!

I DID IT.

Fun fact: Dean list in ukm is 3.67

Guys, I did it. Every tear, every pain, it's worth it.

The examinations were so tough, I'm very sure I would fail each and every paper. But I didn't, I got As and A-s and there's a B. I did it.

I wish to share this happy news not to boast about my result but only to tell you to never stop fighting. Keep on fighting till you achieve it. I never stop struggling against the currents, I never stop fighting and walking and running till where I am now. It seems so surreal but it's here, this is the result I get for not giving up, for trying as best as I could, for not losing faith in myself.

What I am trying to say to you is, if you ever find yourself in the same situation as I once was, please, never give up. It's going to be hard, I swear. Everything is going to go downhill very fast. Your world is going to crumble upon you and your demons inside is going to scream at you to just give up and cry. Do me a favour and don't listen to them. Don't bother the darkness that surrounds you at that moment. Don't bother with the voice that's telling you to quit. Ignore them and get up. Run and fight and you'll get here, you'll be where you wanted to be. And here I am, feeling contented and happy after the wars I've been through. The battlefield is now far behind me and the scenery is beautiful up ahead.

I've proved to you I can do it.

And I believe so can you.

Run.

Fight.

Fly.

    1. Oh my. I didn't do anything special. I didn't exactly stay up all night to study and certainly did not wake up early in the morning too. But I did put a lot of effort in my assignments to make up for my terrible first quiz that I horribly failed (not exactly fail but it's not a good mark). And I made sure my presentations were well prepared. I think that's the main reason how I magically aced the first semester final.

I did study, though not as hard as others (I must admit this). I do make notes during lectures and the notes that I made are the only notes I refer to for examination. Oh, and I remember I quickly refer to other sources (else than my friends and the slides given by lecturers) if I want to understand better about that certain topic. And I did make a mini test of the said subject (instead of memorizing points) every time before the test.

And I guess I prayed to God so hard too that God granted my wish. Hahaha.

  2. Hi, may i ask how can you enroll in tesl at ukm. Was it because of your high cgpa? Did you go to the interview before?

  3. I enroll in TESL under UKM private sector called PKP. Meaning I'm studying in UKM, following the same classes as the main stream students. The only differences are I have to pay 10 times more than what the mainstream students pay since I didn't get to enjoy to education subsidi given by the government, and our matric numbers.

    1. Hi I'm now under PKP and TESL too, but what's with PKP matric numbers?

  4. No, I didn't attend any interviews since MEDSI totally block me out. And yes, CGPA might play a role as well since you need to meet UKM's requirement in order to enroll here.

    1. Hii! I have a question if you don't mind answering 🥺 i didn't get the MEDSI test but i got an interview offer at ukm 🥺 I'm clueless because I don't understand whether the MEDSI test is important for me to get accepted in TESL ukm 🥺

  5. hi. first, congratulation on your success. i have a question. is it possible for students to stay 4 years straight at the ukm hostel?? thats all, thank you.

    1. Hi, sorry for the late reply. The answer is yes it is possible. However, you might get kicked out from your hostel but you apply for other colleges in UKM as well. The college that's usually has vacancy rooms is Kolej Pendeta Zaba

  6. Hi, do you fill the upu to enroll in ukm? I have decided to further my studies in tesl since i am from diploma tesl as well. If so, do we need to fill ukm in upu as our first choice?

    1. Hi, sorry for the extremely late reply! Yes, I did apply from UPU but got rejected. Then I applied under PKP. It's the private wing under UKM. But if you are qualified to apply under UPU, yes, do put UKM as your first choice. If you are facing the same problem as me, and if you really really do want to do TESL, PKP might be able to help! Though I must say the fees are expensive.

  7. Assalamualaikum. Can I know how much the fees? do you get scholarship for your degree?

    1. Hi, sorry for the extremely late reply!
My fee, per semester is RM 5500
For my four years of education, it would be RM44000
From what I heard from my junior, it's RM54000 for them right now.

  9. hi! I'm currently considering between ukm's tesl and usm's tesol for my degree this september. Do you have any thoughts on this ?

    1. This is actually my second time writing this. It got deleted somehow but that's okay. I can't justify which one is better because I only have experience in TESL UKM. But TESL and TESOL are both different in terms of the target audience. While TESL aim for teachers for Malaysian students, TESOL targets to build teachers for International students.

I'll list the pros and cons of UKM TESL and as general. This is purely based on my own experience so other people experience might be different.

      Pros:

      1) Lecturers- The lecturers, majority of them are super nice, kind and quite lenient. I'm from UiTM Foundation and I felt that it was much harder to score in UiTM compared to in UKM. But that might be just me.

      My tips:

      a) Do your best when doing assignments and presentations.
      b) Stop chasing Dean list and start chasing CGPA. When you know the differences between these two, you're on the right track.
      c) Stop chasing A but start impressing your lecturers with your impeccable works.

      2) Low Dean list GPA

While universities like UM and UPM set the DL GPA to be 3.75, UKM's DL GPA is only 3.67. You have higher chances to obtain DL in UKM. It's true UiTM DL GPA is low which is 3.5, but their lecturers (based on my experience) are more strict compared to UKM.

      3) No Koko activities.
No kawad. But you still have CITRA subjects which are compulsory to fulfill.

      Cons:

      1) Repetitive subjects
Almost similar subjects that are registered under different names.

      2) No fixed guideline.
The compulsory subjects you are required to take may change depending on whoever is in charge. We have to take so many extra subjects because of this.

      3) Insane credit hour required
UKM TESL students have the highest credit hours to complete compared to other TESL students from different universities.

      4) Industrial training.
No, this is not practicum teaching. This is Industrial training where you are attached to other companies for 2-3 months. And yes, as tesl students, this is compulsory for us too. No other universities have done this but UKM. This replaced our pre- practicum teaching which is very unfortunate because pre-practicum because it is much more important in order to prepare you to go to school later on in the future.

      5) Longest practicum teaching
While other universities allocated 12 weeks of practicum teaching, UKM allocated 17 weeks for practicum teaching. Remember, we don't have any allowance. Transportation is expensive even when carpooling. Other supplementary materials are all paid by none other than ourselves.

      6) Not so friendly staffs
Only those who deal a lot with the office know about this. Not all, but majority of the staffs give half-hearted services.

All in all, the reason why I stayed in UKM is because of the lecturers. I do enjoy some lessons and some gives me lifelong learning. Literature lecturers are amazing! I'm not trying to discourage you to go to UKM TESL but I'm being extremely honest (based on my personal experience) so you can properly pick out the best option for you and your future. All the best.

    1. Hi, sorry for my late reply. Yes. Your SPM for English must be A. Even though this the private wing under UKM, the requirement is still the same as the mainstream TESL UKM students.

Welcome to Dengkil : Pros and Cons!

I have started my second semester in a new place, UiTM Dengkil, Selangor about more or less three weeks ago! Well, everywhere you go, they'll be pros and cons and the same case can be applied to this matter. But everything I listed down here might change in the future so please don't immediately say no to this brand new place, okay? Lets start with the pros. What do I like about Dengkil? 1) IOI City Mall Putrajaya It's just 20 minutes away from UiTM Dengkil and don't worry, there are buses that will take you to IOI for only RM3.00! Back in Lendu, we need to go for half an hour to one hour ride just to reach AEON, which is the nearest shopping complex we can go to. Don't get me wrong, people. I love Lendu as well. There's AEON and Dataran Pahlawan. But in terms of transportation, I might prefer IOI better. If you want to go to IOI via Taxi (metered taxi), it'll cost you around RM25-RM30. 2) Putrajaya Sentral Near to the bus station. Plus...

Interview Asasi Tesl 2015

Assalammualaikum to dear readers. I make this blog just to put up my experience in Foundation in Tesl's interview since I realize that this experience is indeed valuable and needed to be shared to the upcoming generations that are interested in taking this course in the future. Like any other bloggers who post out about this particular topic, I'll be doing the same thing- I'll tell you about: 1) Documents needed for the interview 2) Preparations 3) Clothing 4) A place to stay for the night (for those who are going to have their interview in UiTM Pasir Gudang) 5) Writing test and also the holy interview.  I'm not sure if this will help you or not but I do hope that it will help you in someways, tho. So, let's move on. The first thing you need to do once you are being called for the interview is preparing the documents that are requested by UiTM. Print two copies of each documents as a precaution measure. Anything can happen so it's better to be prep...
